Cybersecurity Basics for Remote Work

Clean Work Place Blog Banner (3).png

I created this eLearning course as a sample project for my portfolio, developed for a fictional company with a custom logo and branded visuals. Designed for remote employees, it introduces essential protocols for maintaining network security while working outside the office and highlights practical strategies for protecting sensitive information in remote work settings.

  • Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Storyboarding, Graphic Design, Multimedia Production

  • Tools Used: Articulate Rise, Maestro Mighty, Vyond (with AI features), Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word

  • Audience: Remote Employees

What's the Problem?

With more employees working outside of traditional office environments, many rely on different networks and devices to stay connected. While this flexibility supports productivity, it also creates opportunities for cyber threats to target sensitive information. Without clear security protocols, employees may be more exposed to risks such as phishing, weak passwords, or unauthorized access, which can put organizational data at risk.

What's the Solution?

This eLearning course was designed to equip remote employees with straightforward, practical protocols for keeping data secure while working outside the office. By introducing common cybersecurity risks and demonstrating safe practices, the course helps employees feel confident in protecting sensitive information and supporting a secure remote work environment.

The Process

The development for this course began with storyboarding to map out the content flow and learning interactions. I designed custom visual assets, including flashcards and a branded introductory GIF, and kept the branding consistent across colors, typography, and graphics so the course felt cohesive and professional. To make the learning more engaging, I wrote the script and produced an animated video in Vyond, using an AI-generated voiceover to present the content in a clear and approachable way. I also optimized the course for different devices to give learners a seamless experience wherever they accessed it. To keep the course learner-centered, I built in scenarios and examples connected to remote work situations. Multimedia elements, interactive activities, and a knowledge check were included to reinforce key cybersecurity concepts and keep learners engaged throughout the experience.

Full Development

This course was developed as a sample project for my portfolio, with the purpose of demonstrating how essential cybersecurity practices can be taught in a remote work context. To shape the content, I researched and analyzed current industry best practices and guidance from reputable sources such as CISA and NIST. My goal was to take that technical information and translate it into clear, practical guidance that remote employees could understand and apply.

Since this was a sample, I worked independently to create all instructional, visual, and multimedia elements. In a real-world project, I would also collaborate with subject matter experts and stakeholders to validate the content and ensure it fully aligns with organizational needs. The finished course reflects my ability to design engaging, research-based training that balances professional branding, learner-centered activities, and accessible delivery across devices.

Results & Takeaways

Completing this project was a rewarding experience and gave me the chance to bring together many of the skills I’ve developed as an instructional designer. Although this course was created as a sample, it demonstrates how research from trusted industry sources can be translated into clear, approachable content and delivered through a cohesive, engaging eLearning experience.

One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of maintaining consistency in branding, tone, and overall learner experience. I also found value in incorporating multimedia to keep the content dynamic and ensuring the design stayed centered on the learner’s perspective. While I worked independently on this project, I recognize that in real-world settings collaboration with subject matter experts and stakeholders is essential to refining and validating content. This project allowed me to reflect on best practices that I continue to carry into my work.

*To ensure accuracy, the content draws on research and best practices from trusted cybersecurity resources including CISA and NIST.
